🐐 The Best Hooves for the Job: Why Goat Grazing is the Ultimate Land Solution in the Hills

If you’ve been through the Black Hills recently and spotted a herd of goats clearing brush like they mean business—there’s a good chance it was our team at T-Top Timber & Homestead Co.

We’ve been on the move this season, and our goats have been busy tackling one of the region’s biggest threats: noxious weeds and wildfire risk.

From thick brush to steep terrain, our herd has transformed overgrown properties into healthy, fire-safe land—and we’ve got the before-and-after photos to prove it.

But this isn’t just a job for us—it’s a labor of love. Jerrid and I have had an absolute blast working these projects. Every property brings a new challenge, and we’ve honestly enjoyed every mile, every fence post, and every goat wrangled. It’s hard work—but it’s also deeply rewarding.

And we can’t forget to give a shoutout to the newest member of our crew—Babe, our incredible border collie. She’s a natural herder and loyal sidekick, keeping the goats in line and the work running smoothly.

🌾 What Are Noxious Weeds—and Why Do They Matter?

Noxious weeds are invasive plants that aggressively spread, damaging native ecosystems, harming livestock, and crowding out beneficial vegetation. These aren’t just pesky weeds—they’re destructive and stubborn.

In the Black Hills, we frequently see:

  • Canada thistle

  • Leafy spurge

  • Knapweed

  • Wormwood

These weeds can be toxic, reduce pasture quality, and are tough to eliminate—unless you have goats.

Our herd targets noxious weeds without harming native grasses. They’re efficient, natural, and leave behind healthier land—no chemicals required.

🔥 What is Fire Mitigation—and Why Is It Crucial Here?

Fire mitigation means reducing the risk of wildfires by managing fuel sources—things like dry brush, weeds, and overgrown vegetation.

With our dry summers and thick pine coverage, the Black Hills are especially vulnerable. That’s why goat grazing is such a smart option.

Goats help by:

  • Eating dry, flammable brush

  • Creating defensible space around buildings

  • Lowering fuel loads in high-risk areas

  • Reaching rugged terrain machinery can’t

And they do it all while fertilizing the land and keeping ecosystems in balance.

⏳ We’re Grazing Strong—And Booking Up Fast!

We’ve had a busy season—and we’re not slowing down. But if you’re thinking about prepping your land for fire season or finally getting those weeds under control, now is the time to reach out.
